Book Summary:

WINNER OF THE 2021 PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER WASHINGTON POST, AMAZON, NPR, CBS SUNDAY MORNING, KIRKUS, CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY, AND GOOD HOUSEKEEPING BEST BOOK OF 2020 Based on the extraordinary life of National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich’s grandfather who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota all the way to Washington, D.C., this powerful novel explores themes of love and death with lightness and gravity and unfolds with the elegant prose, sly humor, and depth of feeling of a master craftsman. Thomas Wazhashk is the night watchman at the jewel bearing plant, the first factory located near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota. He is also a Chippewa Council member who is trying to understand the consequences of a new “emancipation” bill on its way to the floor of the United States Congress. It is 1953 and he and the other council members know the bill isn’t about freedom; Congress is fed up with Indians. The bill is a “termination” that threatens the rights of Native Americans to their land and their very identity. How can the government abandon treaties made in good faith with Native Americans “for as long as the grasses shall grow, and the rivers run”? Since graduating high school, Pixie Paranteau has insisted that everyone call her Patrice. Unlike most of the girls on the reservation, Patrice, the class valedictorian, has no desire to wear herself down with a husband and kids. She makes jewel bearings at the plant, a job that barely pays her enough to support her mother and brother. Patrice’s shameful alcoholic father returns home sporadically to terrorize his wife and children and bully her for money. But Patrice needs every penny to follow her beloved older sister, Vera, who moved to the big city of Minneapolis. Vera may have disappeared; she hasn’t been in touch in months, and is rumored to have had a baby. Determined to find Vera and her child, Patrice makes a fateful trip to Minnesota that introduces her to unexpected forms of exploitation and violence, and endangers her life. Thomas and Patrice live in this impoverished reservation community along with young Chippewa boxer Wood Mountain and his mother Juggie Blue, her niece and Patrice’s best friend Valentine, and Stack Barnes, the white high school math teacher and boxing coach who is hopelessly in love with Patrice. In the Night Watchman, Louise Erdrich creates a fictional world populated with memorable characters who are forced to grapple with the worst and best impulses of human nature. Illuminating the loves and lives, the desires and ambitions of these characters with compassion, wit, and intelligence, The Night Watchman is a majestic work of fiction from this revered cultural treasure.

Book Summary:

When Jesus left this earth He said He would return and for all to be prepared. However, in order to be prepared one must have at least a general knowledge of what is going to happen. Jesus also told us that He has foretold all things and the Bible does indeed contain all the information needed for preparation. So why do we need these poems? These poems contain nothing new and if everyone was reading Gods Word with understanding there would have been no need for these poems to have ever been written. However, because so few people are reading the Bible and because so much misinformation has been attached to Christianity, especially on the subject of eschatology, God has decided in these final days to speak unto man in terse sundry ways. These poems are given as a brief summary of the gospel and the prophets. They are intended to give the reader enough of a review of the Bible to be prepared for that time ahead when Satan and his fallen angels will be back on this earth. These poems contain enough information to allow the reader to recognize the sequence of events when the four winds are released. These poems will provide the reader with the necessary knowledge to recognize and refuse the mark of the beast when it is time to make that choice. So that there will be no confusion as to the sequence of events relating to the Second Advent of Christ, let us hear the words of Paul: ---Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except (until) there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. ---For the mystery of inequity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: even him, whose coming is AFTER the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved (2Thess 2:1-10). It is important to note that Satan will come first pretending to be God, or more accurately, the returning Christ and that the real Christ comes after Satan is allowed his hour of temptation. This will be a time of testing and only those who receive the love of the truth of Gods Word will be able to survive the test. In other words, those who are not familiar with what God has spoken through his Word, the Bible, about this time in history will be like the five virgins who had no oil for their lamps (Mt 25:1-13). The most important truth to know from Gods Word about this time ahead is that the false comes first. This piece of information will clear up many misconceptions and misinterpretations of Bible warning scriptures. There is also a false doctrine that has been introduced into the Church within the last 175 years that teaches that true believers will be raptured off the earth prior to Satans allotted time. This is a dangerous concept for it will just make Satans work of gathering souls to fill the ranks of hell that much easier. The Bible teaches that Christ is only coming back one more time and that is AFTER Satans allotted time on earth. No one is going anywhere until this time of testing is completed. Bear in mind Satan and his fallen angels will possess supernatural powers and will be capable of deceiving even some of the most knowledgeable and faithful. Are you prepared for that? In the parable of the ten virgins (Mt 25:1-13), Jesus is warning us what will happen if we are not prepared. The use of the word virgins is apropos since Paul has stated that he wants to present the Church to Christ as a chaste virgin (2Cor 11:2). The oil f

Book Summary:

“It’s early to be pegging the year’s best books, but The Wolf and the Watchman, Niklas Natt och Dag’s stunning debut, is sure to be one of them.” —The Washington Post “What's better than an ornate period piece with style to spare? One that includes a murder mystery. Oh, and boy is it a riveting mystery....A bit of Patrick Süskind’s Perfume and a bit of Sherlock Holmes, this wolf has some bite to it.” —NPR “Reads like a season of ‘True Detective’...anchored by a powerful sense of place and a memorable cast of characters....You won’t soon forget it.” —USA TODAY Named Best Debut Novel of 2017 by the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers One morning in the autumn of 1793, watchman Mikel Cardell is awakened from his drunken slumber with reports of a body seen floating in the Larder, once a pristine lake on Stockholm’s Southern Isle, now a rancid bog. Efforts to identify the bizarrely mutilated corpse are entrusted to incorruptible lawyer Cecil Winge, who enlists Cardell’s help to solve the case. But time is short: Winge’s health is failing, the monarchy is in shambles, and whispered conspiracies and paranoia abound. Winge and Cardell become immersed in a brutal world of guttersnipes and thieves, mercenaries and madams. From a farmer’s son who is led down a treacherous path when he seeks his fortune in the capital to an orphan girl consigned to the workhouse by a pitiless parish priest, their gruesome investigation peels back layer upon layer of the city’s labyrinthine society. The rich and the poor, the pious and the fallen, the living and the dead—all collide and interconnect with the body pulled from the lake. Breathtakingly bold and intricately constructed, The Wolf and the Watchman brings to life the crowded streets, gilded palaces, and dark corners of late-eighteenth-century Stockholm, offering a startling vision of the crimes we commit in the name of justice, and the sacrifices we make in order to survive.

Book Summary:

Dear reader, Over the years, I have spent considerable time studying the language and the manuscripts of the New Testament. I also have been blessed with multiple opportunities to teach adult Sunday school. The one subject that was constantly in demand was the Lord's return. Adult believers have an insatiable appetite for an understanding of how this world age will end and any information about our Lord's return. The Bible books that we mostly studied were the book written by Daniel the prophet and the Apostle John's book called Revelation. One of my philosophies regarding the scriptures is that we must allow the scriptures to speak. We often come to the Bible with preconceived ideas and try to force the scriptures to say what we think they should say. This is unacceptable! The Watchman's Handbook was written after years of personal study and prayerful reflection for greater spiritual understanding. May the words of the handbook stir your heart and help you to gain a closer relationship with our loving God. When I was about five years old, my mother told me, "Someday, God is coming back. When He comes, He is going to take us up into the air to meet Him in the sky." Wow! That was quite a declaration to a small child. When I was out of doors, I would look up into the sky and think to myself, When is God coming back for us? I am almost seventy years old and I am still looking up. I hope you are watching for our Lord's return as well. Your old friend in Christ, Jack Binner

They are the Beautiful Ones, Loisail’s most notable socialites, and this spring is Nina’s chance to join their ranks, courtesy of her well-connected cousin and his calculating wife. But the Grand Season has just begun, and already Nina’s debut has gone disastrously awry. When entertainer Hector Auvray arrives to town, Nina is dazzled. A telekinetic like her, he has traveled the world performing his talents for admiring audiences. He sees Nina not as a witch, but ripe with potential to master her power under his tutelage. With Hector’s help, Nina’s talent blossoms, as does her love for him. But great romances are for fairytales, and Hector is hiding a truth from Nina — and himself—that threatens to end their courtship before it truly begins. The Beautiful Ones is a charming tale of love and betrayal, and the struggle between conformity and passion, set in a world where scandal is a razor-sharp weapon. Book Summary:

The Watchman provides critical, biblical tools for anyone serious about prophetic intercession. This book is meat for believers – not milk – equipping Christians with essential intercessory knowledge that for far too long has not been taught in our churches, Bible schools and seminaries.

As the darkness of this world has encroached into our neighborhoods, many intercessors are realizing we need more weapons in order to effectively put on the whole armor of God and withstand this onslaught. Christ alone is able to deliver us through the warriors He is raising up. The revelations in this book will enable us to boldly stand with our Lord Jesus in the gates of His Kingdom as watchmen, prophetically interceding with His eyes to see, His ears to hear and His mouth to speak what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

Book Summary:

The watchman’s life is a life of consecration; a life on the wall dividing the world and church, to watch and take heed, to sound the alarm, and bring God’s message to his people boldly, faithfully and plainly. The watchman acts in the name of another, that is, of God, who has called him to the task of watching which includes praying (power) and preaching (guidance and direction). He is commissioned by God with supernatural gifts (given by the effectual work of the Spirit on behalf of Christ) which allows him to discern, speak and work in the ministry by the word God has given him to preach. He officiates in that office as one commissioned of God on behalf of God’s people. He is not sent of his own accord, but sent of God to minister the words of Christ to his beloved church. In this work on the watchman of Ezekiel 33, McMahon explains the nature of the watchman, the work of the watchman, the watched of the watchman and the faithful exercise of his duty on behalf of Jesus Christ, who has commissioned him to serve his sheep as a faithful steward of the glory of Gospel.

Book Summary:

Path-breaking films have phenomenal behind-the-scenes stories. Read about two of the most iconic movies of our times, and combine it with the journey of the woman, as actor and character, in Hindi cinema. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro: In the 1980s, an unheralded Hindi movie, made on a budget of less than Rs 7 lakh, went from a quiet showing at the box office to developing a reputation as India's definitive black comedy. Some of the country's finest theatre and film talents - all at key stages in their careers - participated in its creation, but the journey was anything but smooth. Among other things, it involved bumping off disco killers and talking gorillas, finding air-conditioned rooms for dead rats, persuading a respected actor to stop sulking and eat his meals, and resisting the temptation to introduce logic into a madcap script. In the end, it was worth it. Kundan Shah's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is now a byword for the sort of absurdist, satirical humours that Hindi cinema just hasn't seen enough of. This is the story of how it came to be despite incredible odds - and what it might have been. Jai Arjun Singh's take on the making of the film and its cult following is as entertaining as the film itself. Gangs of Wasseypur: Running close to five hours and thirty minutes and boasting of no big stars, Gangs of Wasseypur is unlike any Hindi film you might have watched. It is also one of the most feted Hindi films of recent times in international circles. It has been spoken of as India's answer to landmark gangster films of the west, like The Godfather. In Gangs of Wasseypur: The Making of a Modern Classic, the authors go behind the scenes through its chaotic gestation to bring to life the trials and tribulations, the triumphs and ecstasies involved in following one's dream. Including the complete screenplay, the book is as much a testimony to the spirit of everyone associated with the film as it is a tribute to the intellectual honesty and indefatigable spirit of its director, Anurag Kashyap. Mother Maiden Mistress: It's been a long hundred years since Dadasaheb Phalke had to settle for a man to play the heroine in India's first feature film, Raja Harishchandra (1913) - and women in Hindi cinema have come a long way since then. Mother Maiden Mistress documents that journey: from a time in which cinema was considered a profession beneath the dignity of 'respectable' women to an era when women actors are icons and idols. Bhawana Somaaya, Jigna Kothari and Supriya Madangarli sift through six decades of history, bringing to life the women that peopled cinema and the popular imagination, and shaped fashion and culture. Contemporary readers will also find here a nuanced historical perspective - of the social milieu of the time, of the nation and of Hindi cinema itself. Also riveting are the first-person narratives of a leading actress from each decade - Waheeda Rehman, Asha Parekh, Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Madhuri Dixit and Rani Mukerji - all close-up examinations of how some of the iconic characters of Hindi cinema came to be. At once a guide, an archive and a cracking good read, the book records and reviews the woman in Hindi cinema - the mythical, the Sati-Savitri, the rebel, the avant-garde and the contemporary. In a journey through six decades of cinema, seemingly, the more things have changed, the more they have remained the same.

Book Summary:

The Yom Kippur War was a watershed moment in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the modern Middle East more broadly. It marked the beginning of a US-led peace process between Israel and her Arab neighbours; it introduced oil diplomacy as a new means of leverage in international politics; and it affected irreversibly the development of the European Community and the Palestinian struggle for independence. Moreover, the regional order which emerged at the end of the war remained largely unchallenged for nearly four decades, until the recent wave of democratic revolutions in the Arab world. The fortieth anniversary of the Yom Kippur War provides a timely opportunity to reassess the major themes that emerged during the war and in its aftermath, and the contributors to this book provide the first comprehensive account of the domestic and international factors which informed the policies of Israel, Egypt, Syria and Jordan, as well as external actors before, during and after the war. In addition to chapters on the superpowers, the EU and the Palestinians, the book also deals with the strategic themes of intelligence and political of the war on Israeli and Arab societies.
